Pepper Palace In The Sun…
You Just Might Be a Hot Sauce Fiend …
… If you slather TABASCO on your scrambled eggs more freely than your kid douses his Rice Krispies with sugar …
… If the preferred ingredient at your next tasting event is tomato rather than grape …
… Or if you eat jalapenos like popcorn …
… Then this place is for you. It’s the Pepper Palace at Broadway at the Beach (located across from Amici’s Brick Oven Pizza), and it’s “The Hottest Shop in Town.”
I knew it was my kind of place when the most predictable question you can ask (“What’s the hottest stuff you got?”) is met with a simple gesture toward a counter display topped by a flashing red fire engine light.
So how hot is “The Hottest Sauce in the Universe?” Every other sauce available at the Pepper Palace’s vast, wraparound tasting counter offers pretzel sticks or tortilla chips for sampling; this stuff is sampled with the tip of a toothpick. And as owner Dan Ehlert recommends for seasoning a six-quart pot of chili, “just start with two drops.”
One of the Pepper Palace’s staple items is its “Death By Salsa,” a slow-burning concoction that offers plenty of flavor and flies off the shelves. Like horseradish? Try “Nasal Napalm,” which comes with a warning:
”Intentionally concealing the intense aroma & burn of this product to misguide others is wrong & is likely to earn you a good butt-woopin.”
Even if you don’t quite have the stomach for hot & spicy, we bet you know plenty of others who do. And when you visit the Pepper Palace to get them a gift, your choices include dozens of specialty sauces branded either with college pride, disdain for a deposed Iraqi dictator, or taunts against your manhood – all delivered with good humor, of course, and a smile from Dan and his wife, co-owner Debbie Ehlert.
Pepper Palace products recently earned five first-place awards at the Fiery Food Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, and 16 awards in all.
For more information, visit the Pepper Palace Web site, or just stop in for a visit. Then stop back here, and tell us what you think is the Pepper Palace’s best!
